Kenny Shields and Streetheart
10:15 PM-MIDNIGHT
Action,Action...read all about it! The song remains the same and Streetheart, just like that famous opening track from their debut album, are still an important and enduring part of Canadian rock history. Formed in 1976, Kenny Shields, Daryl Gutheil, Spider Sinnaeve, Paul Dean and Matt Frenette began winning audiences over with their combination of raw talent and musical power. Led by Kenny the band built a strong and loyal fan base and the release of "Meanwhile Back in Paris…" showed this was a band with a very exciting future. "Meanwhile" quickly went platinum and the band received a Juno for "Most Promising Canadian Group". Streetheart followed that with a string of gold and platinum albums as well as a gold single for their definitive version of the Rolling Stones’ "Under My Thumb". They kept building their audience throughout the country and although there were member changes — with John Hannah replacing Paul Dean on "Under Heaven, Over Hell"and Herb Ego replacing Matt Frenette on "Quicksand Shoes" — Kenny, Daryl and Spider remained the constant and definined the Streetheart sound with their self-produced "Drugstore Dancer". In 1981 Jeff Neill took over for John Hannah as guitarist and along with the Kenny, Daryl and Spider, wrote and produced the most successful album of their career - the self-titled "Streetheart" album. It still remains a fan favorite today and contains many of Streetheart’s most popular songs. However, time and the task of trying to break through into the US market finally took its toll on the band. With justifiable internal frustration and management incapable of doing the type of business that was needed to be successful, the boys called it quits in 1984. |
Fast forward to 2003...
Ladies and Gentlemen… will you please welcome this year's Inductees into the Western Canadian Hall of Fame, Kenny Shields and Streetheart. An honour for only a select few artists, Kenny and Streetheart were inducted into the Hall of Fame based on their impressive legacy of excellence and their undiminished fan loyalty which is still so strong even to this day. After 30 years, Kenny and the band continue to play with a fierce energy and precision that other bands would be hard-pressed to match and they remain a benchmark in their industry. Everyone from veteran promoters to longtime loyal fans can’t help but be impressed at how GOOD this band still is. Just come to a show and watch the band work. You’ll agree this isn’t just hype. Kenny, Daryl and Jeff along with current members Jake Jacobs and Tim Sutton continue to do what Streetheart has always done from the very beginning which is to deliver high quality shows fueled by an "absolutely everything they’ve got" attitude. It’s all done with a level of ease and confidence that only comes with their kind of experience. That, combined with great songs, is a major part of what makes their shows so memorable. They know their fans deserve the best and this only highlights the level of friendship and respect the band have for each other, as well as for the history of Streetheart. If you haven’t seen Kenny Shields and Streetheart lately, you owe it to yourself to see one of Canada’s premier bands, and see that after 3 decades and a million records sold, what made the band so special then is still so clearly evident today.

Cod Gone Wild
5:30 PM-6:45 PM
Cod Gone Wild is a Modern World Celtic band, based out of the Okanagan Valley of beautiful British Columbia, Canada. The “Cods” have melded veteran musicians from diverse musical backgrounds such as folk, rock, jazz, and funk, to create a modern Celtic sound with driving rhythms and tight vocal harmonies. Cod Gone Wild was born when Newfoundlander and lead singer/guitarist Andrew Mercer made the move to British Columbia in 2009. With him, he brought a passion for traditional Irish/Newfoundland music and a vision to create something unique in British Columbia and Canada, while promoting the culture, heritage, and music that he has grown up listening to and performing since he was five. With the musical team of Anjuli Otter (fiddle, vocals), Chad “Rhino” Carter (Drums, Vocals), and Roy Kawano (Bass) the vision has become a reality and has evolved into something very unique. The band released their first studio album in January 2011, which has been receiving regular airplay on the East Cast of Canada, Celtic Radio stations around the world, and on CBC, since its debut. Cod Gone Wild has been extremely busy touring, including a very successful month long tour of Newfoundland in August 2011. After returning from Newfoundland, the band, inspired by the trip to the east coast, started pre-production on “the Traveler” which was released in March 2012. The title track, written by band members Andrew Mercer and Chad “Rhino” Carter, tells the story of a Newfoundlander that leaves home with his guitar in hand to head west in search of prosperity, but fails to find it in the oil sands of Alberta. Much like Newfoundland native, lead singer and guitarist Andrew Mercer did, three years ago. Mercer, who also co-engineered and produced the album along with Carter, had this to say about the project:
“Where someone comes from is very important, especially if it is a place like Newfoundland, where tradition, culture, and heritage are so deeply rooted. After relocating to British Columbia, it was essential for me that the influence from home remained strong through the songs. It was equally important that the individual musicians in the band be creative with their instruments, reflecting their experiences and where they came from. The result is this album -- a group of likeminded musicians sharing a vision for creating and performing music. We have blended together our talents, diverse musical backgrounds and influence to create what we call our own brand of “Modern Celtic” music. “the Traveler” for us, represents the journey that we are all on together; spreading the Celtic spirit from Newfoundland to British Columbia and beyond. Our musical journey has just begun.”
|
Songs on the new album include traditional classics, such as Newfoundland favorite “I’se Da B’ye,” British folksong “Drunken Sailor,” and maritime classic, “Farewell to Nova Scotia,” to original songs including the title track “the Traveler,” “Days Gone By,” “Five Thousand Miles,” and a live version of “Sociable!” The band also included a few songs that were written by fellow artists including “the Galway Girl” by Steve Earle and “Saltwater Joys”, by Wayne Chaulk, a Newfoundland songwriter and member of east coast group Buddy Wasisname and the Other Fellers. |

54•40
10:15 PM-MIDNIGHT
Neil Osborne - Dave Genn - Matt Johnson - Brad Merritt
5440 are one of the most important popular music groups to emerge from the Canadian cultural landscape. With more than 2 decades of performing and recording behind them, the band has an unbelievable catalogue of hit songs. Lead by chief songwriter Neil Osborne, 5440 have carved out a legacy of gold and platinum albums and a outstanding reputation for their live performances that carries through to this day. Over 25 years, 2000 performances, and 16 releases the secret to 5440's longevity is their ability to redefine and reinvent themselves, taking long time 5440 fans on a ride that is bound to pick up new young fans on the way. To experience 5440 in concert is to experience how songs have touched and continue to touch people's lives. From people who have followed the band from their humble beginnings in east Vancouver to new young fans that have discovered the truly original band that is 5440, a 5440 concert is an extraordinary affair that bridges the gaps of generations through a shared love of music. |
"I simply can't find the right words to describe 54.40, one of the most respected Canadian bands ever. Can one possibly gauge the accomplishments they have attained during their two-decade-long journey in one sentence? The answer in my mind is no," Scene Magazine.
In its original trio form, 54.40 played its first gig on New Year's Eve 1981 at the 'Smilin' Buddha Cabaret' in Vancouver. After recording a couple of independent releases and reconfiguring the band as a foursome, they signed with Warner Brothers in the US and released four albums. Then in 1991, 54.40 found a new home on Columbia Records at Sony Music Canada.
Since then, the band has toured throughout the world, released 9 more albums, received numerous awards and has achieved almost a dozen Top-10 hit singles. Along with their incredible songwriting ability, 54.40 expanded their horizons by opening their own studio, racking up producing and mixing credits. Neil Osborne produced Juno nominated Jets Overhead and Winnipeg singer songwriter Cara Luft, while guitarist Dave Genn produced up and coming rock bands Marianas Trench, Arm Chair Cynics and is a co-songwriter for the chart topping Hedley.
In 2005, the band appropriately signed a recording agreement with True North Records, one of Canada's longest standing independent labels. Since hooking up with True North, the band released the acclaimed "Yes To Everything" album and followed it with a live DVD titled "This Is Here This Is Now. The latter recorded at the magnificent Commodore Ballroom during their traditional annual October appearance at the Vancouver landmark.
Throughout their journey, 54.40 remains creative and fresh, growing musically and lyrically with each project. "A band has to evolve with its audience to keep their interest," stated Brad Merritt. "We make records based on where we're at, at that time. So it's kind of like a time capsule."
When asked about their track record Matt Johnson once commented, "one thing we hear consistently is 'I didn't know you guys had so many hits,' but we just consider ourselves songwriters. We enjoy the craft and whether we're trying to write an eight-minute epic or just a three-minute pop song, it's very enjoyable for us and we're not afraid to do either." (London Free Press) |

Greg Sczebel
8:45 PM -9:45 PM
Greg Sczebel is not your typical, twentysomething, “soul” singer. If anything, he’s the exact opposite. Or maybe he’s just trying his darndest to bring the soul back to popular music….like when Chuck, Stevie, Billy, Freddie and The King of Pop reigned on the Hit Parade. This is the type of artist Greg Sczebel aspires to be, and the type of music he works relentlessly to create.
Intently staying independent for the past 8 years (despite interest from numerous major US labels), Sczebel chose to pursue longevity over instant fame and determined to earn a respected career the old fashioned way - through hard work, extensive performing and creativity.
Still based in the small city and vacation destination of Salmon Arm, BC, Sczebel has gathered national and international recognition in his young career - including a Juno, a Western Canadian Music Award, and three awards from Yoko Ono and David Sonenberg’s esteemed John Lennon Songwriting Contest. He has performed numerous times with Grammy Award winners David Foster and Michael Buble, and is a regular keyboard player and background vocalist for multi-platinum selling Country artist, Paul Brandt. He was also recently chosen to write and record a single with Los Angeles producer, Toby Gad, who’s credits include writing and producing Beyonce’s smash hit, “If I Were a Boy” and Fergie's "Big Girls Don't Cry".
And that’s the short version of the story of this young blue-eyed soulman with the impossible-to-read last name (for the record, it’s pronounced “Sa-Bell” with a soft ‘a’). Greg Sczebel’s sophomore album, “Love & the Lack Thereof” is available in stores nationwide. |
